Daybreak, Fireworks and a Moon

While I was at the Spring Fling I wanted to knit something that was mindless and easy to work on while chatting with friends. Enter Daybreak!

Daybreak - FINISHED

I’ve been wanting to knit this shawl since it came out way back when but I never got around to it. Plus, I was always a little wary of what colors I would work with – the most paralyzing decision of all when doing stripes, IMO. But I figured this would be a perfect time to work on one and just leapt in. I knew I wanted to make the shawl out of Fiberphile MCN Luxe Sock as it is one of my all-time favorite yarns AND I have a large stash of it – thus making it easy to pick two different colors. After a lot arguments with myself, I settled on colors A, B, and C. I asked the hubby and my sister to choose between AC or BC and the choice was unanimous, so AC it was.

That’s Pele’s Fire and Happy Accident #14 and, as my sister said, they look perfect together. And, obviously, I agree!

Daybreak - FINISHED

The work wasn’t quite as mindless as I was expecting because during Section 1 you have to COUNT halfway to the marker to increase and that was a bit of pain when all I was doing was chatting away and not paying too much attention to the number of stitches on my needles! But that’s okay… I still got through it and didn’t mess up once (amazingly enough)!

Daybreak - FINISHED

But don’t be too impressed because when I hit the “easier” section 2 I did mess up by not slipping the center stitch to create the vertical “line” down the middle! Oh well. By the time I noticed I could have easily ripped it back (it was only 4 rows) but didn’t want to… and I don’t much care that the shawl is “naked” down the middle. It’s beautiful anyway! 😀

Daybreak - FINISHED

I also changed it up a bit by knitting 22 stripes of each color (instead of 20) and only 4 purl ridges (instead of 7) for the lower border. I really like how the larger stripe section stands out when wearing it as a scarf, so I’m very happy with my decision.

Daybreak - FINISHED

I would totally recommend this shawl to everyone, but I’m afraid I’m one of the last people ever to knit one… so I guess I’d just be preaching to the choir, no? 😉

Daybreak - FINISHED

Pattern – Daybreak by Stephen West (project link | pattern link)
Yarn – Fiberphile MCN Luxe Sock in Pele’s Fire and Happy Accident #14 (rav link | store I used)
Needle – US4 (3.5mm)
Cast on – April 28, 2011
Cast off – May 9, 2011
Modifications – Knit 22 stripes of each color and only knit 4 purl ridges of the dark color on the edging. I also omitted the center slipped stitches.

And before I leave you, I wanted to share with you all some fireworks that were being set off over the Statue of Liberty the other night. I’ve already shown you fireworks from this vantage point before, but this time there was a beautiful red/orange moon right next to it and I couldn’t help myself and grabbed the camera. I love the shots that came out!

And then it was the finale and the entire Statue was obscured by the fireworks. So cool!

I just love living in an apartment with a view like this… you never know when the perfect opportunity for a picture will present itself! 🙂

  1. Those are great firework shots! The shawl is very pretty…I like the colors you chose…and that third shot of you and the shawl is just gorgeous!

  2. I like the colors in your shawl! Especially the gray/black. It’s just dark enough, but not too dark and still charcoal-y enough. And those fireworks do look awesome. Where I live, when the local university does fireworks at their football stadium you can see them if you stand in the middle of the street. Not quite as cool since I’m normally out there in my robe with all the other kids in the neighborhood.

  3. That moon is amazing! Your Daybreak is amazing-er!! I love the contrasting colors and the mods you’ve done. Stunning piece of knitting.

  4. I think there are plenty of people who haven’t knit this yet – myself included! Just curious, how much yarn did you have left over?

  5. Gorgeous shawl! I haven’t knit it either, although I want to; can’t decide on the stripes either! Love the colors you chose 😀 And beautiful pictures of the fireworks too! You have a wonderful view!

  6. Lovely shawl and I like the change in the center. I’m on the fence with this shawl. I love the look of it, but I’m not so sure about stripes. Your color choice is very nice – they were made to go together.

  7. Shawl turned out beautiful and you’re NOT the last to knit it…that might be me! Your view is spectacular, great shots:)

  8. Your shawl is beautiful! Daybreak is such a pretty pattern, and is in my queue. How did you do the color changes? Did you break the yarn or carry it up the side? That’s the big thing deterring me from doing this shawl- I’m not sure how to do the color changes!

  9. beautiful shawl! the 3rd and last shot of you are awesome as well:) i haven’t knit this yet either, but i just decided on colors for it the other day:) it seems like i’ve seen a few of these completed lately:) i absolutely love your color choices:)

  10. Awesome fireworks photos! What a great view too. I really like the colors you chose for your stripes. I have yet to make one of these and I think I have it saved as one to knit, but I am so slow in completing anything that it will probably take me forever to even start.

  11. This little shawl is quite popular! You’ve done a beautiful job on yours, as always. I also love your fireworks photos! Could they be any more perfect with the cresent moon sitting right there?!
