The air has cooled down, I have started thinking of gloves and shawlettes (because we all know shawlettes are so in and scarves are so out) and sweaters, and though this is my favorite season of all, it is also the beginning of the dreaded flu season. Yes, dear readers, I came down with the flu. And, yes, it was the H1N1 flu. And, yes, it is as bad as you’ve heard. I think I told my husband at least three times that I was going to die from it, LOL. But I didn’t (obviously or this would be a truly strange entry!) and I’m recovering. It took 2 whole weeks of not leaving the house except to go to the doctor and I still have a nagging cough and a slight case of laryngitis, but at least I don’t feel like I’m about to die anymore. And that’s a great thing because it’s just in time for me to enjoy my favorite season of all!
Okay, so I admit this picture was taken last year (the leaves haven’t gotten that far along yet), but it does totally represent one of the best things about fall: the colors! The greens turning into browns, yellows and reds are just beautiful and I love watching the leaves change colors. Not to mention, of course, the oranges from the pumpkins because it will be Halloween soon and then Thanksgiving, two of my favorite holidays! Basically, I just love me the Fall season.
In honor of it being October, I am unofficially participating in Socktoberfest. What is Socktoberfest you ask? Basically, it’s whatever you want it to be do with sock knitting! You can make it your own and as for me I’m making it my month of knitting as many socks as I can! To kick it off, here are my finished pair of Devon socks that I finished on September 30… they are my honorary Socktoberfest socks as they were only 1 day off from being October socks after all:
I just love love LOVE how these came out! The colorway (Fiberphile August 2009 Sock Club) is just amazing and made the pattern just pop, IMO.
It’s definitely one of my favorite socks I’ve made ever and they came out perfectly… after frogging it three times, LOL!
Pattern – Devon by Cookie A (rav link | project link)
Yarn – Fiberphile Alchemy Cashmere Merino Sock in Shadow Lake (rav link | store I used)
Needle – US2.5 (3mm)
Cast on – September 17, 2009
Cast off – September 30, 2009
Modifications – I only did 3 repeats on the leg (instead of 4) and I knit all YO’s through the back loop to minimize the lacy-ness of the pattern.
For a true Socktoberfest sock, I have started up a pair of Vilai using what I think is the perfect Fall colorway, Sundara Sock in Toasted Orange Over Pistachio:
Is that a gorgeous color or what? And the pattern is amazing too! I’m loving the cables running down the back of the sock:
I’m a bit further along on them now and hope to finish the first sock soon though this pattern is actually quite painful on my hands… tons of K3tog and SSSK’s. I don’t knit it for too long at a time to give my hands some rest. I’m also working on a test knit pair of socks that I can’t show you yet (but will hopefully soon) and I’m going to be joining in on the Socktoberfest Mystery Sock KAL as well. We’ll see just how many of these pairs I will actually finish before October is over, but I’m hoping for at least 3. Wish me luck!
Oh no! What a shame you got sick! I hope you get better soon! The socks are gorgeous, I’m so jealous of all that beautiful yarn. Good luck with the socks, I can’t wait to see what you’ll make next!
Yikes, that H1N1 sounds crazy. Glad you pulled through!
As usual, the colours you’ve chosen for your socks are beautiful. The orange really shows off the stitch detail nicely.
Good luck with your month of socks!
Your sock yarn choices are just beautiful! Love the colorways…beautiful…
Oh goodness, I”m so glad you are feeling better! Your socks are absolutely stunning!
Fall is my fave time of year as well – it doesn’t quite get as colorful over in the Pacific Northwest but it’s still pretty! 🙂
Thanks! Fall is nice in the Pacific Northwest for sure but the East Coast has the best fall colors, I think. 🙂
My girls have the flu now. Hopefully they will be back at school on Wed. It took me 2 months to finish my last pair of socks! Must knit faster or fewer projects (I’m working on 6 right now). LOL! 🙂
Oh I hope your girls feel better soon! That flu is nasty! Good luck on your next projects… sounds like you’ve got your plate full, LOL.
I’m glad you’re feeling better, it took my husband weeks to feel 100% again when he had it last spring. The socks are gorgeous, I love the color of Vilai!
Oh that sucks about your husband, though I’m glad that he recovered well. I’m on my 3rd week now so hopefully by next week I’ll be 100%. Thanks for the compliments on the socks!
Glad you’re feeling better! Your pictures are all gorgeous. Happy fall! No Socktoberfest for me…although I need a new project.
Thank you and Happy Fall to you too! Good luck finding a new project… I tend to have way too many in the works!
Yuk to the flu, poor you. Those socks are wonderful.
Being sick is gross. Getting better is amazing- I’m glad you’re on the other side! Your socks are too much! I wish I could do such a good job at choosing the perfect sock yarn to a pattern. Brilliant!
Yeah, being sick does suck! I’m glad to be recovering as well. Thanks so much for your compliments on my socks! My favorite part of knitting socks is picking the perfect yarn for the pattern. 🙂
Ouch, I hate the flu. Happy to hear everyone is well. I love your yarn choices and your socks.
That sucks dude!
Awesome pictures as always.
Fall/autumn is my favourite season too! Love your Devon socks, the colours are perfect for this time of year! Glad to hear you’re getting over the flu, sounds like it was a horrible one!
Love your socks – they are GORGEOUS! I’m so sorry you got the flu – I’ve had it before (not H1N1, but old garden variety flu) and I always feel terrible when I hear that someone has it because it os SO AWFUL. Get well soon!
