My DH just had his birthday on St. Patrick’s Day (I already wished him Happy Birthday, but Happy Birthday again to him! 🙂 ) and although we had a nice dinner and everything, the celebration wasn’t exactly what we usually do as he was preparing for his marathon run on Saturday in Washington DC! We drove down there on Friday and faced a huge amount of horrible traffic (which really sucked!) and worried about making it there in time to get his running bib, etc. Thankfully we made it in time and were able to pick everything up just fine. He was worried about finishing the marathon because he’s had a hurt calf for the last month and hasn’t been running even half as much as he should have been – not to mention the fact that this was his first marathon ever and he only started running back in June of last year. Just sayin’.
We went to sleep early that night as he had to wake up at 5am to make it there in time from the hotel. I was asleep through all of this and don’t even remember him getting up! When I finally woke up myself I headed over to the Finish Line to see DH cross it! I literally arrived 5 minutes before he came through and though I didn’t get a picture of him actually crossing the finish line (boo!) I was able to catch him right afterward to snap a shot of him in his well-deserved medal.
Doesn’t he look tired? As he should be having finished it in under 4 hours – 3 hours 58 minutes to be exact! We were both very proud of his time and he’s very happy with it too. 🙂
Afterward we wandered around DC. I’ve been there a ton of times before from when I used to live in Baltimore so I wasn’t too excited to take any pictures, but DH insisted on taking one in front of the White House because the last time we went to the White House we weren’t so keen on the guy in charge and he said a fresh picture would be worth it. Plus, he looks better in this picture than the one above, LOL!
I really wanted to see lots of cherry trees in bloom but I only saw maybe three *just* barely starting to get blossoms. I was kind of disappointed, but here are a couple of the beauties:
And one more of a non-cherry blossom… I just thought these were pretty!
While there we also saw lots of protests against the war. This one in particular stood out to me as it was a silent protest of sorts:
Each one of those little white papers has the name of a person who died during the war in Iraq (I think… I don’t think Afghanistan is included). They are supposed to be like gravestones for the dead. It’s actually very sad to see just how many of those little markers there are. It was definitely quite sobering and striking as well.
After walking around there we went to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and had a great time looking through their new exhibit on Human Evolution. The next day we headed home. It was a great weekend for DH and I’m so happy for him for accomplishing something he’s wanted to do for so long!
Also, I just realized that this blog has been lacking in knitting lately and I promise I’ll remedy that with the next post. I hope Spring is treating all of you well! We’re just getting tons of rain today, but the sunny weekend days sort of make up for it, I think.
Well done, Spencer! Andrew’s very impressed with his time! He did it in 3h49m once but that was years ago and he’s not been able to do it in under 4h again!
Once again, congratulations to him! I hope he’ll come and do London soon!

Wow! Congratulations to your husband, and yay for wandering DC! I went to college in Baltimore (very briefly) and easy access to DC was very much a plus.
BIG CONGRATS TO YOUR DH ! ! ! !
We used to run but nowhere close to even thinking about marathons. 5K was my speed. We jogged for years.
What an accomplishment ! ! !
And he should be VERY PROUD of his time.
GREAT JOB ! ! !
Hugs,
Gerry [yarn winner from your Giveaway}
Congratulations to your husband! I can’t even imagine running a marathon.
The cherry blossoms are beautiful. They get me excited for spring, but it’ll be a while before they’re blooming up here 🙁
Well done to your chap for finishing, its hard! Here in the UK Eddie Izzard ran loads of marathons all in row round the country, it was inspiring to hear about.
I love the cherry blossoms.
Wow, great job! Congratulations on finishing, that’s a major accomplishment.
Congrats to Spencer!
You photos of the cherry blossoms and magnolias are stunning! I love both those flowers so much.
congrats to you DH. The Cherry Blossoms are great. You should come back next week when they will be in full bloom♥ I love all the photos♥
